Two per cent more pay: Switzerland’s wage battle for 2027 begins

Travail.Suisse is calling for general wage increases of two per cent for 2027, even after real wages rose again last year.

The unions argue that households have faced years of pressure from living costs and health-insurance premiums and should receive a larger share of productivity gains.

Syna is demanding five to six per cent in health care, linking pay to staff shortages and retention.

That creates a difficult trade-off: higher pay may stabilise staffing but adds costs to an already expensive system.

The employers’ federation rejects the claim that productivity gains are not shared and expects average nominal increases of around one per cent.

It also favours more individual differentiation, while unions want general increases that reach workers with weaker bargaining power.

KOF expects roughly 1.2 per cent nominal wage growth and about 0.5 per cent inflation, implying a modest real gain.

But surveyed companies expect higher inflation, which would leave much less improvement in purchasing power.

The wage round will decide how productivity gains are split and how sectors with labour shortages respond.

There will not be one Swiss answer: the outcome will be negotiated industry by industry and company by company.

The headline number does not tell the whole story. Regional, sectoral and household effects can differ sharply, which is why the next data and policy decisions will matter as much as the first announcement.
