The hot summer is pushing Swiss tourism higher into the mountains

Graubünden recorded more than 400,000 overnight stays in June, the strongest June since records began in the 1990s and 3.8 per cent above a year earlier.

Domestic guests account for nearly two thirds of the market and their overnight stays rose 5.1 per cent, helped by people escaping heat in lower-lying cities.

Chinese bookings fell by almost 30 per cent, illustrating how geopolitical disruption and travel patterns can offset strong domestic demand.

Destinations with a strong local customer base are therefore performing differently from those more dependent on long-haul visitors.

Swiss overnight stays in Valais increased 4.6 per cent in June, and tourism officials reported positive signals for July.

Day trips are especially important in hot weather because mountain escapes can be planned at short notice.

Areas with many repeat Swiss visitors report solid occupancy, while some Gulf demand has softened and been partly replaced by more U.S. visitors.

A diversified mix of source markets is becoming a strategic advantage.

Across Switzerland, overnight stays had fallen 0.7 per cent over the previous four months to 20.3 million, while an initial July estimate pointed to a small year-on-year increase.

The hot summer is therefore shifting demand rather than producing a uniform boom: from lowlands to mountains, from some foreign markets to domestic guests and from long-planned holidays to short-notice trips.

The headline number does not tell the whole story. Regional, sectoral and household effects can differ sharply, which is why the next data and policy decisions will matter as much as the first announcement.
