After the fire, Germany faces a political test

Chancellor Friedrich Merz is travelling to Hürtgenwald to thank firefighters, relief organisations and other emergency personnel. The blaze has been extinguished, but a local disaster has already become a national political debate. Crews fought the fire for days, with large areas affected and responders working close to their limits.

The visit therefore serves two purposes. It recognises the work on the ground and marks the chancellor's return to public political activity. Criticism had grown because no federal government member visited the area during the emergency. The appointment will also test whether public gratitude is followed by practical decisions.

Wildfire, extreme heat and prolonged drought are no longer questions for civil protection alone. They affect water reserves, power networks, transport, health services and municipal budgets. Fire brigades require different equipment, warning systems must react faster and communities need credible evacuation and supply plans.

An upcoming cabinet meeting is expected to address heat protection and adaptation. The dispute concerns the route as much as the diagnosis. Social Democrats favour additional constitutional powers, while conservatives argue that existing instruments should be used more effectively. For cities and responders, the decisive issue is whether funding, responsibility and procurement are settled in time.

Hürtgenwald demonstrates how closely environmental risk and state capacity are connected. Strong crisis communication can build confidence, but it cannot replace prevention. Germany needs maintained forest access routes, water points, shared digital situation maps, joint exercises and funding that begins before disaster strikes.

The political measure will therefore not be the visit itself. It will be whether federal, state and local authorities turn the experience into a durable strategy. The fire is out; the test of Germany's climate readiness is only beginning.
